SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability, built into how we source, print and ship, not added after.

Every job we produce touches three decisions that matter: what it's made from, what it's printed with, and how it gets to you. This page sets out where we currently stand, what we're formally certified against, and what we're still working towards, in plain terms.

WHERE WE STAND

Certified where it counts, honest where we're not there yet.

Three commitments, at three different stages, none of them overstated.
Certified
FSC Chain of Custody
We hold FSC Chain of Custody certification, audited annually. It means certified paper and board is tracked from certified source through to finished product, so an FSC claim on your job is backed by a paper trail, not just a paper stock.
Accredited
Good Business Charter
We're a signatory to the Good Business Charter, a public commitment against its 10 components: real living wage, secure contracts, employee wellbeing and voice, ethical sourcing, fair tax, and prompt payment to our own suppliers.
In progress
Working Towards B Corp
We're currently working through the B Impact Assessment, the process behind B Corp certification. It's a multi-year undertaking done properly rather than a badge added early, and we'll say clearly when it's actually achieved, not before.

How we make print more sustainable

The three areas where a print or packaging job's impact is actually decided.
01 / MATERIALS

What it's made from

Certified stock is our default, not the upgrade. We specify FSC Mix and FSC Recycled papers and boards ahead of virgin fibre, and where a claim is made about recycled content, we can say whether it's genuinely post-consumer waste rather than mill offcuts.

Where a brief allows it, we look beyond paper altogether, to grass paper, bagasse and mono-material structures that are easier to recycle at end of life than mixed laminates.

02 / INKS

What it's printed with

Most of our print runs use vegetable and soy-based inks in place of traditional petroleum-based ink, which cuts the VOCs released as a job dries and leaves the finished paper easier to de-ink and recycle.

Where the substrate calls for it, we specify water-based inks instead, for the same reason: less solvent going in, cleaner fibre coming out the other end.

Vegetable & soy-based Water-based options Lower VOC
03 / FREIGHT

How it gets to you

Sea freight produces a fraction of the CO2 per tonne that air freight does over the same distance, so it's our default for imported stock, with air kept for jobs that genuinely can't wait.

We consolidate shipments rather than run frequent part-loads, and favour UK and European suppliers to cut transport miles before a single unit ships.

A note on
how we talk
about this

Sustainability claims in print and packaging are scrutinised more closely than ever, and rightly so. We'd rather undersell what we do than overstate it: where we're certified, we say so plainly; where we're still working towards something, like B Corp, we say that too. We won't call a job "carbon neutral" on the strength of an unverified offset, and if a claim can't be backed by a certificate, a receipt or a measured number, it doesn't belong on this page.

Sustainability Policy

Our formal policy in full, the standard we hold ourselves to on every job.
A note on
how to read
this policy

This document sets out our ideal sustainability standard, the position we work to by default on every job. It is not a guarantee that every option described here is available on every order: material availability, timelines, budgets and supplier capacity can all limit what is achievable on a given job. Where any part of this policy is a fixed requirement rather than a preference, please tell us in advance, so we can confirm a delivery option that meets it before work begins.

1. Purpose and Scope

Parallel Print is a UK promotional merchandise studio, supplying branded merchandise, clothing and packaging to businesses of every size. This policy sets out how sustainability is built into that work, from the materials we specify and the suppliers we choose, to the packaging we ship in and the product that lands on a customer's desk.

It applies to every employee, director, supplier and subcontractor working on behalf of Parallel Print, and to every product category we offer: promotional merchandise, branded clothing, print and packaging, and the web shops we build and fulfil for our clients.

Our aim is straightforward: the most sustainable, lowest-impact option is put forward first on every job, not offered as a costed-up upgrade.

2. Policy Statement

Parallel Print is committed to:

  • Specifying recycled, certified or responsibly sourced materials as the default across merchandise, clothing and packaging, not as a premium option.
  • Assessing every supplier against labour, welfare and environmental standards before a single unit is ordered.
  • Reducing the environmental impact of our own operations, including transport, energy use and waste.
  • Designing and specifying product to be used and kept, not landfilled after one outing.
  • Being transparent with clients about what is certified today, and honest about where we still have work to do.
  • Complying with all applicable UK environmental, packaging and modern slavery legislation, and reviewing this policy as that legislation evolves.

3. Sourcing Materials Responsibly

Promotional merchandise

Where a suitable certified or recycled alternative exists, it is specified as standard: recycled stainless steel and aluminium for drinkware and tech, FSC-certified and recycled paper for notebooks and pads, and refillable or recycled-plastic barrels for pens and writing equipment. Single-use plastic is avoided wherever a brief allows.

Clothing

Branded apparel is produced through vetted, ethical supply chains, using certified organic and Fairtrade cotton where available, and finished to a standard built to survive repeated wear and washing rather than one outing.

Print and packaging

Paper and board are sourced from certified, controlled-source, responsibly managed and ethically harvested forests. Structures are right-sized to the product they protect, using recyclable substrates and low-impact inks and finishing, so less material does the same job.

4. Supply Chain and Ethical Trading

Every supplier we work with is assessed against our procurement policy before onboarding, and reviewed on an ongoing basis. That review covers:

  • Worker welfare, working conditions and labour standards at the point of manufacture.
  • Country and site of origin, reviewed as standard on every job rather than only on client request.
  • Compliance with the UK Modern Slavery Act 2015, including a zero-tolerance approach to forced, bonded or child labour anywhere in our supply chain.
  • Materials and processes checked against our procurement policy, with recycled or certified stock specified wherever the brief allows.

Where a supplier or product cannot meet these standards, we will say so rather than represent it otherwise, and will work with the client to find a suitable alternative.

5. Packaging, Waste and the Circular Economy

Packaging we specify (whether for a client's product or for our own shipments) is designed to be right-sized, recyclable and reusable wherever possible. We favour formats such as recycled kraft bags, paper-over-board with recyclable laminates, and made-to-order event materials that can be reused across multiple events rather than discarded after one.

Parallel Print meets its obligations under the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging and Packaging Waste) Regulations and the UK's extended producer responsibility (EPR) framework for packaging, reporting packaging data as required and working to reduce the volume and impact of packaging placed on the market.

Waste generated in our own operations is separated, reduced and recycled wherever collection facilities allow, with residual waste sent to landfill treated as a last resort, not a default.

6. Carbon and Environmental Impact

We work to reduce the environmental footprint of our own operations by consolidating shipments and freight where possible, choosing lower-impact transport options, and reducing energy use in our studio and warehousing.

We do not currently hold third-party carbon accreditation, and we say so plainly rather than imply otherwise. Where we make a claim about a material, process or supplier being lower-impact, it is because it is certified, documented or verifiable, not because it sounds sustainable.

7. Product Design and Durability

A purposeful brief is the starting point for every job: product that earns its place, chosen to be used and kept, not landfilled after one outing. Where the format allows, we specify refillable, replaceable or repairable components, so one item does the job of many disposable equivalents over its working life.

This applies equally to promotional merchandise, branded clothing and packaging: the same standard of material first, built for reuse, and worth keeping applies across every category we supply.

8. Compliance and Legal Framework

This policy is written and maintained with reference to the following (non-exhaustive) UK legislation and standards, and will be updated as they change:

  • The Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging and Packaging Waste) Regulations, and the extended producer responsibility (EPR) framework for packaging.
  • The Modern Slavery Act 2015.
  • The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations, where applicable to branded tech products.
  • Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) chain-of-custody requirements, where FSC-certified materials are supplied.
  • Any client-specific ethical trading, modern slavery or sustainability requirements agreed as part of a supply contract.

Nothing in this policy overrides a more stringent standard agreed directly with a client.

9. Governance and Responsibilities

Overall responsibility for this policy sits with Parallel Print's leadership team. Day-to-day responsibility for applying it (supplier assessment, material specification and client communication) sits with every employee involved in sourcing, producing or fulfilling a client order.

Any employee or supplier who becomes aware of a breach of this policy, or of a practice that may be inconsistent with it, should raise it with us without delay.

10. Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement

This policy is reviewed at least annually, and sooner if relevant legislation, certification standards or our own supply chain changes materially. Each review will assess progress against the commitments in Section 2, and update the policy to reflect new certifications, materials or standards as they become available to us.

We would rather under-claim and over-deliver than the reverse. Where a claim in this policy or in client-facing material can no longer be supported, it will be corrected or removed at the next review, or sooner.

11. Policy Approval

This policy is reviewed and approved by Parallel Print's leadership, and takes effect from the date of publication until its next scheduled review.
